It's been a while since you've heard from me! We made the big move from California to the Oregon Coast in early December, and immediately began working seven days a week a few days after getting here. Things are starting to level out a bit now that the Christmas rush is over, so I finally have some time to talk deals again.
Except... I'm almost in the middle of nowhere with no place to work deals like back in Cali! I knew this was coming, but still! Whoa!
We do have a local Select Market where we get basics, and I buy whatever is on weekly special if we need/will use it. These deals are nothing to write home about, but better than regular prices.
I shopped the other day with a fistful of store coupons and the cashier exclaimed, "Wow! You really got a lot of groceries for $50!" Meanwhile I was cringing at how few groceries I was getting for $50! lol

So, what's a couponer to do without a Walgreens, CVS, or other big store in which to wheel and deal? Tonight I turned to Alice.com. I've promoted it here before because of the massive number of rave reviews I'd read, but now I get to add my own voice.
I made a relatively small order as I had left California with a pretty hefty stockpile, and not all prices were what I'm willing to pay.
You might notice that there are coupons on Alice! I've read that they match insert coupons, but don't know that for certain. I've also seen products at very low prices after coupons, so there can be occassions to stock up.
Also shipping is always free, which is a BIG plus!
I will weigh in later with the rest of my experience.

Yesterday was Tuesday and that means new weekly fliers for the grocery stores.
I LOVE getting the new fliers and seeing what the deals are for the coming week!

This week there isn't much to get excited about in my area; 2/$1 Chicken of the Sea tuna, and B1G1 12 oz Caribou coffee with a $1 coupon from coupons.com (link on the right) at Albertsons (Western). Some good produce deals at my local Mexican markets also. Aside from that I won't be doing much shopping this week.

Things have been so crazy round here I haven't even been shopping for deals, and there seemed to be slim pickins anyway...
But this past week I was finally able to stretch some dollars, thanks to my good friend Bob Unplugged who keeps me well stocked in coupons!

First was a trip to Albertsons where I got 2 cans of Chicken of the Sea tuna for $1, 4 boxes of General Mills cereal for $1.50/ea - $1/2 coupon = $5, and 4 Hillshire Farms Deli Select Lunchmeat for $1/ea = $4.

Then I went to Vons for Motts apple juice at $1, 2 Hillshire Farms kielbasa for $4 - $1/2 coupon = $3, 4 boxes of General Mills cereal @ 2/$3 - 2 x $1/2 coupons = $4, 18 ct eggs for $1.50, and some markdown steaks at a price too good to pass up!

Today I made it in for the CVS Back to School Sale getting 2 Pilot 2 pk pens, 2 composition notebooks, 2 sticky notes, and 2 packs of binder clips for FREE after ECBs! I also go a raincheck for 2 index card boxes that will be free after ECBs.

CVS just came to my city. We went to a grand opening last weekend where they had terrific coupons and gave us a $10 gift card. I combined that with a $10 off $20 coupon , and racked up the $5 in ECBs I used today. I am happy happy to finally have CVS here!

I have a Louise Hay calendar a dear friend sent me that is so fabulous! I love seeing what each day's phrase is. The wall above my desk is covered with the phrases I want to keep in front of me all the time.
Today's is a real favorite; "My life is a party to be experienced and shared with everyone I know." I believe that!

Currently I am reading a book I would love to buy 10,000 copies of and give to everyone I know, or ever have known. It's that good.
The Voice of Knowledge by Don Miguel Ruiz has changed my life unlike any other book I've read, and I read a lot of personal growth books! In it's simplicity I have found the tools to change my thinking, and therefore my life. I honestly cannot recommend it enough!

Today I got some great deals on produce. I went to check out a new store that just opened here, Superior Grocers. I was just amazed at some of these prices!

I came home with six bags of food for $23.65, and only used coupons for three items (2 bags of tortillas and sour cream). Sorry for no pics, I had to hurry and get dinner made.
The weird thing is that their milk prices are double the other grocery store I usually buy non-coupon items from.

Tomorrow I'm heading to Albertsons. Seattle's Best coffee 12 oz is $3.00 off with Avenu, and it's printing a $1 OYNO Catalina. There's also a mail in rebate offer to get your purchase price back, but I don't know if it's worth it for $3. I might save that for a time I've paid full price.

I also need to get myself in to Walgreens and get some of those FREE Scunci elastics! My cats always steal 'em so having a back stock would be a very good thing.

I've been receiving some really terrific feedback from all over the web about my blog, and I am listening.
I've added a few links on the right in answer to some points made; CreditReport.com and Coupons.com. More to come for great, money saving opportunities and other ways to get ahead with your finances.

I've also heard that I should put more of my personality into the posts, so I intend to do that as well. Hopefully it won't scare anyone away! lol

I am a baby blogger, and I'm finding there is definitely a learning curve in creating a blog that is both fun and helpful. Any other insights are always welcome.

Paring Down the Grocery Budget

One of the first places most people can cut back on expenses is the food budget. The frugal rule of thumb is $25 per person per week, but most people I speak with spend much more.

If you think like I used to, that clipping a coupon to save $0.35 on an item is a waste of time, you're right. There is another, better way to use coupons however- one that WORKS!

First step, buy multiple Sunday papers. If you have access to a larger city's paper, get some of those too as they likely have different coupons. (For example; I buy 4 of my local paper and 4 LA Times.) Separate and match each coupon flier page by page, staple the like coupons together (taking care not to staple over expiration dates or bar codes), and cut the coupons out. All coupons, even the ones you won't use as you can trade them for some you will.

Now go to a site like A Full Cup and search for your local stores. Ideally you want to hit at least one drug store (I use Walgreens) and 1-2 grocery stores, as each store runs different deals each week.
On the forums for those stores you can see what is on sale and/or clearance and match them up with your coupons.
Best case scenario is to get paid to take products, or get them for free, but you'll never have to pay full price again!

Get the free-cheap items in quantities that will last your family 3-6 months (from sale to sale, but not so much that they'll expire before you can use them). This will allow you to build a stockpile so that you can choose what price you are willing to pay, rather than shopping when you need an item and have to pay whatever the price happens to be that week.
There are some items that you never need to pay one penny for again; shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste..
